Floor Preparations for Natural Stone Tile

Slate and Artstone - Natural flooring materials such as slate, granite, limestone, and even marble, are becoming very popular in architectural installations. This is part of an overall design trend in which we are bringing the real world of nature back into our modern lives, by using materials which are taken from the earth.

With some materials you can install the tile right over existing flooring if it is sturdy enough. However with natural stone this can be risky, as even the slightest defect in the underlayment can hurt a tile project. Therefore the old floor will have to be removed. This will be easier with some materials such as vinyl, and harder with others such as ceramic and stone.

When installing natural stone the most important thing you have to pay attention to is the quality of the underlayment you are installing on. Underlayment refers to the layer which is placed between the subfloor and whatever surface flooring you choose. When removing old tiles, be very careful not to damage this layer with knives or scrapers. When finished with removal, be sure to repair this surface by sanding or using leveling compound.

Often when removing old tiles, it is easier and desirable to simply remove the old underlayment and replace it. This is often done when removing natural stone, ceramic, or other materials which are difficult to pull up without damaging the underlayment.

Stone tile requires an underlayment which is resistant to changes due to temperature and moisture. Plywood is alright for installing ceramic tile in a dry room, but for natural stone you will want to put something such as cement board down to ensure the quality of the installation.

Before installing check the surface of your underlayment carefully to ensure that it is perfectly smooth and free from defect. Be on the lookout for irregularities, water damage, or weak joists. If there are rises or dips in the surface, a leveling compound can be applied to fill them in. Imperfections at this level can result in tiled floors which are uneven, or where tiles stick out crookedly and break when stepped on. Even if a problem doesn't arise immediately after installation, a poor underpayment can lead to maintenance problems down the line.

Once you have a smooth, durable, level surface to work on, you can start developing design ideas. It is always a good idea to take careful measurements and layout your stone flooring on graph paper before actually grouting the tile. If necessary, do a dry run where you actually place the tiles on the floor with spacer, before actually installing. - 29291

At Swift Nature Camp, in Northern Wisconsin, children play outside while learning about Nature and Science. Here are some helpful hints we do at Summer Camp that you can try at home,

Experts tell us the first step in becoming an environmentalist is noticing what nature offers. Such observation often leads to a desire and commitment to conserve and protect the natural world.

Being in nature is a regular part of our Science Summer Camp at Swift Nature Camp. Yet it is so important that we are intentional so we do not overlook the sounds, sights, textures and diversity of the ecosystem.

Please read these simple programs that can be done while walking through the woods. You may need supplies but it will take only a few minutes to get them.

One you feel you have a feel for these activities invite your children's friends to come along, I'm sure they too will enjoy being away from their scheduled lives and enjoy the peace of nature,

Look Down Supplies: Yarn and scissors Ahead of time: Cut the yarn into 15-inch pieces, have one for every two campers. Assignment: Move off the trail, and make a square on the ground with the yarn. Study what you find within the square. What lives there? What is the soil like? What grows there? Use a stick and dig into the ground a little. What do you see? Conversation: What did you find in the square or circle that surprised you?

Life is Full of Decay Supplies: Several magnifying lenses, flashlight Ahead of time: know that you can find some rotten logs. Assignment: Find a downed tree in the woods. Examine what is growing on the log, such as moss or mushrooms. Look for any insects living in or on the log. Shine the flashlight inside the log. Is there evidence of any creatures, such as raccoons, opossum or snakes inside? Examine the bark to see what is happening to it. Turn the log over to see what is happening underneath. How is the forest recycling itself? Use the magnifying glass to look closely at anything that interests you. Conversation: What additional changes would you see next summer?

Take A Wildflower Hike Supplies: Wildflower field guide Ahead of time: Try to do a little research what might be blooming in your area. Assignment: Stop at any wildflower, observe it, and try to figure out how it grows, how it produces seeds, and what type of soil it grows in. Use the field guide to identify the flower. If you have extra time even draw it in nature. Conversation: How are the flowers alike? How are they different?

Reishi Hot Water Extract vs. Alcohol Extract

Medicinal mushrooms have been immensely popular in Asia for millennia. Today, Americans are waking up to these powerful nutraceuticals. In the wake of this new awareness follow issues of product quality claims made by competing brands.

All species of medicinal mushrooms appear haunted by this issue. Particularly so, it seems, is red reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), the oldest medicinal mushroom in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Please note, however, that the information in this article applies generally to all medicinal mushroom species.

The first and perhaps obvious caution is to stay away from cheap mass-produced brands of medicinal mushrooms that may only contain dried and pulverized mushrooms, in which case the medicinal compounds are still inaccessible behind the mushrooms' cell walls.

There are many real therapeutic brands on the market, though. But even among them, there are significant differences. They all claim to be the best, naturally, because they all want to sell their particular brand. So let's sift the data, get the facts straight, and clear up misleading information that is out there.

There are primarily three ways to extract the medicinal compounds from red reishi. Each method pulls out different compounds, all of which have been proven by scientific research to be therapeutically important.

1. Water Extraction, Hot (polysaccharides and more)

2. Alcohol/Ethanol Extraction (triterpenoids, etc.)

3. Fermented (arabinoxylanes, etc.)

The water soluble compounds, primarily polysaccharides, are powerful anti-tumor agents, immune enhancers and strong antioxidants. [1]

Through alcohol extraction, we get triterpenoids, a large group of lipids with many sub-groups. Research shows triterpenoids help regulate clotting, blood pressure and cholesterol. More importantly, they are the anti-inflammatory compounds that are the reason why reishi often gets recommended for arthritis, asthma and allergies. [1]

And then there are the new and unique medicinal compounds that get created when reishi is fermented. These "secondary metabolites" have their own therapeutic properties, different from the first two groups, including anti-tumor, immune support and blood-sugar balance. [2]

This article is not meant to recommend any particular brand so none will be mentioned by name. But the author does know of two reishi companies (Japanese and American) that both claim only hot water extract of reishi is effective and that alcohol extracts are of no use.

Naturally, the reason they say so is because they want to sell their own brand. However, those statements are scientifically untrue. Hot water and alcohol extractions both contain critical compounds.

When looking for the best reishi extract, find one that uses at least the first two extraction methods in combination: Hot Water and Alcohol Extraction. Even better may be a brand that includes all three methods listed.

As a last point, when you look for the best reishi extract, one thing to look at is the form it comes in. For example, any reishi extract that fully dissolves in a water-based liquid such as coffee probably only contains hot water extracted reishi. So while reishi/ganoderma coffee certainly makes for a superbly delicious and healthy cup loaded with polysaccharides, it won't include the important anti-inflammatory triterpenoids.

On the other hand, alcohol tinctures can actually contain both water soluble polysaccharides and alcohol soluble triterpenoids. The way you know is that the polysaccharides will fall out of solution because of the alcohol, and will make the tincture cloudy. That's alright though; you just need to shake before you take. Capsules and tablets may be one or the other or both. The only way to know is ask the manufacturer or read their information.

Swift Nature Camp is a Wisconsin Science Summer Camp for boys and girls ages 6-15. Our focus is to blend traditional summer camp activities with an appreciation for nature, animals and the environment. Here are some helpful activities we do at camp, try these next time you head for the park.

Taking treks through the woods is a regular part of Science Summer Camp. However, many times staff and campers merely walk along the trail without really noticing what is around them. They overlook the sounds, sights, textures and diversity of the ecosystem.

So when you take your kids out in nature, try these things. Simple supplies are needed, so it will take only a few minutes to collect them. Or you can plan and keep them on the side ready to go.

Groups can stop along the way and do the activities together, or small groups can be assigned particular activities during the entire hike. Campers can choose one or more of the following activities:

Make a Rubbing
Supplies: Paper, crayons or charcoal
Ahead of time: It is best to have experience at this before you help others.
Assignment: Search for trees, rocks and logs that have a variety of textures. Put the paper over the surface of the tree, rock or log, hold the charcoal or crayon at an angle, and rub over the paper so that the unique pattern is transferred to the paper.
Conversation: What did you discover by doing these rubbings?

Changes Everywhere
Supplies: Clipboard and writing utensils
Ahead of time: think or research how things would be different if the land was developed
Assignment: Stop along the trail and look into the woods. Imagine that the land had sold this plot of land to a developer to build. How would that development changethings? What effect would it have on the habitat and food supplies of the animals living there? What would happen to the soil if the trees were cut down? How would the plants in the woods change? How would the threat of erosion increase?
Conversation: How have ecosystems near your home been destroyed? What changes have happened to the land?

Look a Tree
Supplies: Blindfolds
|Ahead of time: look for a place on the trail where there is a variety of trees.
Assignment: Find a partner and decide who will be blindfolded first. The sighted partner will lead his/her partner to a tree. The blindfolded child will explore the tree by touch and smell. Then the sighted partner leads his/her partner away from the tree. Once the blindfold is removed, that camper tries to locate the tree. Switch places and repeat.
Conversation: What have you learned about trees that you didn't know before?

Have An Active Vacation In Iceland

There are a wide variety of tours available in Iceland. Some of these cover large areas of the country, while others focus on smaller areas. You can have traditional trips as well as unique tours. If you choose nature tours you will see unforgettable landscapes, fresh lava fields, powerful waterfalls and grand ice caps. If this is not enough, there are day tours, as well as weekend and holiday tours with emphasis on hiking.

Banks

Banks are also wonderful places to go to if you're looking for second-hand camping trailers. What's great about banks is that, unlike private sellers, they're not selling because a trailer has defects. They're merely selling those things that they repossessed, probably because the owner was unable to complete paying for it. And because of this, the camping trailers are often in good condition. And, usually, you'll find yourself paying a small amount for a very good trailer at the bank's expense, and only because the bank does not want to store it anymore.

Government Auctions

The most wonderful thing about government auctions is that very few people think about using them. And this is a nice thing for the government, merely because there will be lesser people to bid, and fewer hassle. If you see a nice trailer, usually repossessed, you might want to place a bid. Teachers tell us the first step in becoming an environmentalist is seeingwhat nature offers. Often this can lead to a desire and commitment to conserve and protect the natural world we live in. THis is one of our fundamental principals at Swift Nature Camp
Walking or hiking through the woods is a regular part of Summer Science Camp.

However, with out having a purpose many times staff and campers merely walk along the trail without really noticing what is around them. They overlook the sounds, sights, textures and diversity of the ecosystem.

So when you take your kids out in nature, try these things. Simple supplies are needed, so it will take only a few minutes to collect them. Or you can plan and keep them on the side ready to go.

Groups can stop along the way and do the activities together, or small groups can be assigned particular activities during the entire hike. Campers can choose one or more of the following activities:

Make a Rubbing
Supplies: Paper, crayons or charcoal
Ahead of time: It is best to have experience at this before you help others.
Assignment: Search for trees, rocks and logs that have a variety of textures. Put the paper over the surface of the tree, rock or log, hold the charcoal or crayon at an angle, and rub over the paper so that the unique pattern is transferred to the paper.
Conversation: What did you discover by doing these rubbings?

See a Shape
Supplies: Index cards and pencils
Ahead of time draw a circle, square, triangle, heart, straight line and rectangle on separate cards. Pass out the cards to campers before hike begins.
Assignment: With your card find the shape in naturei.. I Write down your findings on the card with the corresponding shape.
Conversation: Have you see that before?

Look a Tree
Supplies: Blindfolds
|Ahead of time: look for a place on the trail where there is a variety of trees.
Assignment: Find a partner and decide who will be blindfolded first. The sighted partner will lead his/her partner to a tree. The blindfolded child will explore the tree by touch and smell. Then the sighted partner leads his/her partner away from the tree. Once the blindfold is removed, that camper tries to locate the tree. Switch places and repeat.
Conversation: What have you learned about trees that you didn't know before?

The Plan

Things Required To Build A Caravan Porch Awning:

1. Canvas tarp built to specifications

2. Tape Measure

3. Rope (preferably nylon)

4. Stakes

5. Poles that are adjustable for tents

6. Weatherproofing Scotchguard

The Creation Stage

Use the tape measure and figure out the length of your caravan. How wide do you want that awning to end up being? Canvas tarps are available in numerous sizes, but most caravan awnings are about nine feet deep. Try to measure out the size that's perfect for your needs.

Make sure the loose end of the rope is always nailed down with a stake.

Finish The Tent Poles

Next, attach those last five tent poles into the caravan awning's grommets. There should be, at last, three awning poles for the rear and three for the front.

Protecting Your Awning

Now you have your caravan porch awning and it looks great, but it's very susceptible to weather damage. Spray your canvas tarp down with the Scotchguard you bought. Leave your tarp for three hours so it can dry, then go for a second coat. When you're through, your awning will be weatherproofed for good. We are so used to seeing some bonsai labeled as "for the indoors" that some people think there really is such a thing as a true indoor tree. There isn't. If you 'd like to keep more of your trees alive and maybe even thriving, never forget that a tree belongs outside - every chance it gets.

Just because a tree is not cold tolerant enough to survive without protection from the elements, it doesn't mean that it belongs inside. it just needs some temporary protection. Depending on the type of tree you have and where exactly you live, that degree of cold protection will vary.

When you buy a bonsai it's important to understand just how much cold it will tolerate. It's November right now and we haven't had any frost and my leafless Zelkova and Japanese Black Pine are still outside. If we get a mild frost I won't worry. But my Trident Maple is still outside too and that puppy won't like the frost. There are other trees I could grow like a Ficus or a mini jade or a Fukien Tea that would die if they were outside right now- not because they belong inside- just because they hate the cold.

What are even more perplexing are the trees that are very accurately labeled as outdoor trees. Not only is there a huge variation between the relative degrees of hardiness among outdoor bonsai, there isn't one that will make it though a subzero winter without some protection.

But right now I want to focus on the indoor trees and what you can do to keep them as healthy as possible. My number one bonsai wish is that every bonsai should be able to spend the summer outside. You'll need to find a spot that is sheltered from the wind and the hot afternoon sun, and when you move the tree outside you'll probably want to put it in a fair bit of shade to start. There are penalties you'll endure when you bring your trees outside. They will need to adjust to the change. You'll need to watch for bugs and hope that the squirrels don't get too curious and the raccoons stay away. You'll need to pay attention to the water and be sure they're not burned. Your reward will be a healthier tree.

When your trees are outside for the summer and come in for the winter they will possibly respond differently that they do now. For example, a Chinese Elm that is always indoors will probably be evergreen, but one that moves in out and experiences a seasonal variation is bound to drop some of its leaves in the winter. It might even drop them all and only need to sit, barely moist and leafless, in a cool window for the winter. But it will be more robust, all things being equal that it's evergreen counterpart.

The biggest problem with thinking of your tree as an indoor bonsai is that it implies that dozens of different trees - from a tropical Ficus to a semi-desert loving mini jade and anything in between all like the same conditions. And that just isn't so. Treat your tropical divas like divas and they'll thrive. Treat your desert dwellers like the scrappy little survivors that they are. Let them bathe in real sun (once you acclimate them), but don't forget to bring them back inside before it gets too cold. - 29291

These little creatures can chew through almost anything, and if they get to your bird feeder, it will scatter the feed all over your garden. The other thing that you want to remember is to make sure that you keep the feed dry. If your feed gets wet or moist, you will find that it will create clumps, and we all know that wet things also attract mold. The simple way to combat this is to give your feeder and seeds a little shake to separate them before and after you have filled it up.

Every few weeks a feeder should be disinfected. The best approach is to disinfect the feeder by scrubbing it with a weak bleach solution, which would consist of 2 gallons of water and one fourth cup of bleach. During wet weather more frequent disinfecting is required. It is important that the feeder be completely dry before more seed is added.

If you live somewhere where there is constant wet weather during either your winter or summer season, you should invest in a covered bird feeder. If using an exposed feeder, just put out a tiny bit of feed that will be used up in one day. An additional option is to place the entire feeder under shelter.

Suet, in turn, should be given to birds only in cool or cold weather. Hot weather can cause this type of food to be unhealthy and unsafe. Runny suet is known to stick to feathers and is difficult for the bird to clean.

Along with bird feeder care, you should also take care of the food storage. The seeds must be kept in a sealed airtight container that is always dry. The best containers to use are the plastic garbage cans with tight lids. This will also keep rodents away. Suet should be stored in the freezer.

If a dead or sick bird is ever spotted at or around the feeding area, remove the bird food for a couple of weeks in order to disperse healthy birds. This will lessen the possibility of disease spreading. It is also a good practice to report sick or dead birds to wildlife officials so that they can monitor the local bird population.

Taking proper steps to care for your bird feeder will allow for many years of enjoyment. In addition, unwanted visitors will have no reason to visit the yard. The only further requirement is to sit back and enjoy the show. - 29291

Of course, you can always just fish close to home. A trout weighing one whole pound can be fun to catch. Three minutes of fighting the little guy after two hours of sitting over the ice. Now, imagine catching the little trout's cousin (literally, its cousin), the mighty marlin, weighing in at hundreds of pounds and battling you for three-and-a-half hours!

On the North Pacific coast of Costa Rica, two of the favored fishing centers are Flamingo and Tamarindo, both of which are along its famed Gold Coast. Sailfish are available here year round but the peak season is May through August. Want to try your hand at tuna fishing? Fish these waters from August to October. You can often find large schools of tuna from 40 to 400 pounds. If roosterfish appeal to you, visit the Bay of Papagayo around November to March, staying near the coastline. Depending on the time of year, you also have a chance to hook wahoo, marlin, or the shimmering dorado. And, for a terrific experience, rent an ocean kayak.

Billfish are a popular target for Costa Rica fishermen and ladies and the Central Pacific coast offers them in abundance. Visit the waters off Quepos or the Los Suenos Marina from December to April for sails or marlin. From May though October you can often catch a vibrant dorado while trolling offshore. Snapper, nice sized tuna, wahoo, roosters, and snook are also common along these shores and are found closer in. You will not be disappointed fishing here!

For many, Costa Rica fishing paradise is found on the southern Pacific coast down to Panama, off Puerto Jiminez, Golfo Dulce, and Drake Bay. When when the water is warm, big marlin and sailfish are abundant. Inshore, you will likely run into roosters, large snapper, wahoo, and amberjack. The Golfo Dulce is reported by many to offer the finest inland fishing in Costa Rica. This is because it contains many small coves and is very rocky, giving fish a great place to hide. Hook a barracuda, grouper, or delicious sea bass here as well as other inland species. And, at times, you will have thousands of porpoises around your boat as they follow the bait fish.

Costa Rica's Caribbean waters contain the famed fishing areas of Barra del Colorado and Tortuguero. Although these waters can be very choppy, you can catch many types of deep sea fish on days when the water is flat. The spectacular tarpon are plentiful here from May to November and some reach about 150 pounds or more. They are caught off river mouths and also in rivers and estuaries that are filled with wildlife. This remote coast is one of the few places where you might catch a rare Atlantic sail. Other fish like snook are also very common. You may even hook a giant grouper, guapote, tripletail, or Jack Crevalle! And, try to time your visit when the Atlantic green sea turtles are nesting on the world's largest reserve.

Whether you are a pro or just an avid fisherman, Costa Rica fishing offers an outstanding, unique experience. Remember that many species of fish migrate throughout the waters. The many fans of watching local birds can now turn their passion into meaningful research through Project FeederWatch. Facilitated by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Project FeederWatch involves volunteers across the nation helping scientists monitor bird life in North America. The final result is a comprehensive report and publication.

Annual counts take place from November through early April. Registration begins March 1st for the following year, and continues for the next twelve months. FeederWatchers count the total number of birds in the area at a single time to avoid counting a single bird more than once. This also alleviates the need for constant monitoring of a bird feeder or yard.

The cost of participation is $15 which covers the bulk of the project's cost. In addition, all participants receive a kit containing a poster for identifying birds, a wall calendar, a guide to proper bird feeding, a form for counting, and directions for using these items. Data collected in Project FeederWatch is featured in science publications and frequently used by ornithologists and birdwatchers throughout North America. A new medicinal mushroom from Korea is gaining reputation around the world at record pace. Most commonly known by its Latin name as Phellinus linteus, it is also sometimes referred to as Mesima (Japanese), and rarely by its English name, Black Hoof Fungus.

Phellinus linteus is common in Southeast Asia as well as the southern United States. It grows on hardwood species of oak, mulberries and poplar, and sometimes on pines. [1]

Unlike most medicinal mushroom species, which were originally used in China or Japan, Phellinus linteus first became popular in Korea as a complement to traditional cancer therapies such as radiation and chemotherapy.

The reputation of Phellinus linteus as a powerful medicinal mushroom has rapidly spread across the world and today it is increasingly popular with medical professionals from the U.S. and Japan to Turkey and Israel as an immune booster [2-11], especially for the prevention of cancer metastasis. [5,10,12-17]

Perhaps it all got started when one of the first Korean studies on Phellinus linteus in'96 reported that it exhibited a wider range of immunostimulation and antitumor activity than polysaccharides isolated from other medicinal mushroom species. [4]

Years later, American world-renown mycologist Paul Stamets helped deepen our understanding of Phellinus linteus when he published a comparative analysis with the most common medicinal mushroom species: Agaricus blazei, Lion's Mane, Chaga, Reishi, Maitake and Cordyceps. [18]

Among the seven species of medicinal mushrooms compared in this study, Phellinus linteus had the most powerful effect on enhancing macrophage activity, by 5,700%. Macrophages are an important part of the immune system's cancer fighting arsenal. The amount of Phellinus linteus extract used was equal to 3,750 mg for an adult of average weight (165 lbs). [18]

Although human macrophage cells have been known to both induce and inhibit cancer growth, the published research on Phellinus linteus shows that it promotes the anti-cancer properties of macrophages rather than their potential cancer-inducing properties. [8,14,19,20]

Three additional papers have been published with reports of patients using Phellinus linteus extract and experiencing "spontaneous" regression:

1. First out was a Japanese article in 2004 with a case study of a patient with hormone refractory prostate cancer and bone metastasis who exhibited "dramatic remission" after using Phellinus linteus extract. [15]

2. In 2005, a Korean paper related the case of a 65-year-old patient with liver cancer and skull metastasis who experienced "spontaneous regression" after one and a half years of using Phellinus linteus. [17]

3. Finally, an article published 2006 in the Japanese journal Radiation Medicine told of a "patient with hepatocellular carcinoma with multiple lung metastases in whom malignancy spontaneously regressed after taking Phellinus linteus Mycelium." The 79-year old patient reportedly "took extract from Phellinus linteus Mycelium for one month, and 6 months later the tumors appeared to be in complete regression." [16]

During the European "Copper Age" five thousand years ago, a man of high ranking status fled his home valley of Val Venosta, Italy, across an Alpine glacier. But his enemies caught up with him. An arrow penetrated his subclavian artery, which soon bled him to death. In 1991, two unsuspecting tourists came upon his mummified remains. On the body of "Oetzi the Iceman" were found pouches with two medicinal mushroom species, the oldest known example of mushrooms used medicinally.

One of the mushrooms he carried was a traditional de-wormer known as Birch polypore (Piptoporus betulinus), which makes sense because whipworm eggs were found in Oetzi's intestines. The other mushroom was a species frequently used to cauterize wounds, Tinder fungus (Fomes fomentarius). The Iceman's right hand had been injured days earlier and was in the process of healing when he was killed.

Both species belong to the group of mushrooms known as polypores, so named because of the many pores underneath. They often grow on trees, and to date no species is known to be poisonous to humans.

With a couple of notable exceptions, most polypores are inedible because they are woody and fibrous. But as natural remedies in the form of tea, extracts and poultices, they have been invaluable to people all across the globe for many millennia.

Native American traditions tell of using different kinds of polypore extracts to combat smallpox and other diseases introduced with the arrival of Europeans. This includes Reishi (Ganoderma resinaceum), Chaga (Inonotus obliquus), Birch polypore, and Turkey tail (Trametes versicolor), as well as the now rare and endangered species Agarikon (Fomitopsis officinalis).

As it so happens, Agarikon is also the oldest mushroom referenced in European medical literature. It was listed by Dioscorides in the Materia Medica of 65 B.C. as a treatment for tuberculosis. In confirmation of this, Polish researcher K. Grzywnowics published an article in 2001 titled Medicinal mushrooms in Polish Folk Medicine where he states that Agarikon tea was historically used in his country as a remedy for lung conditions, as well as rheumatoid arthritis, open bleeding and infected wounds.

So far, we've only covered the history of medicinal mushrooms in Europe and America and have barely even touch upon their use in Asia, where their use has been even more exhaustive. At least three Asian species must be included in any article on the history of mushrooms.

First in this list has to be Reishi, a mushroom so revered throughout Asian history that it's found in numerous ancient wood-carvings and temple engravings. It also owns the distinction as the oldest medicinal mushroom in Chinese literature, first encountered in Shen Nong's Herbal Classic, 2,000 B.C. Often referred to as a "panacea, its acclaimed properties are too numerous to list.

Next is Cordyceps, a minute fungus from the Tibetan plateau, parasitising on silk caterpillars. Cordyceps sinensis was first mentioned as a medicinal mushroom in The Classic Herbal of the Divine Plowman from 200 A.D. It is popular with athletes to improve physical stamina. Historically, it's been used as an aphrodiciac.

Finally there is Shiitake, the number one gourmet mushroom of the Orient. Shiitake has been cultured in China for approximately 1,000 years as a food. What is less known is that it is also one of the most researched medicinal mushrooms in the world. A polysaccharide extracted from Shiitake is approved in Japan as an anti-cancer drug. Other qualities hinted at by research include antibiotic and immune enhancer.

Modern research into medicinal use of mushrooms began in earnest in the late 1960's Japan. One pioneer, Dr. Ikekawa, discovered that families of mushroom growers had significantly lower cancer rates than their surrounding communities. Scientific research into medicinal mushrooms has expanded exponentially since that time and continues to increase and intensify until this day. A Surprise Morning Visit for My Family

The day started like any other, up at 6am and straight to the computer. Having done an hour of work, I knew the cafe would be open, so I grabbed my daughter and headed for the door. It was time for my coffee. Today though, I stopped abruptly when I got to our front gate. There staring right at me, a mere arm span away, was a magnificent kookaburra.

My immediate thought was wonder that we got so close without startling it to flight. These majestic birds are not budgerigars, they tend to avoid humans. Seeing one so close is a treat so special it is to be remembered and treasured. So I backtracked and roused my wife so she could come and enjoy this beautiful bird while it rested on our front fence. There we stood, the four of us, enjoying each other's company a mere two feet from each other for nigh on five minutes. What a spectacular start to the day.

Once it flew away, I went and got my coffee and reflected on the experience. I can't believe I had to get within two feet of this bird before I realized it was there. Unbelievable, I am sure the kookaburra was watching me from the moment I stepped outside. Was I really that caught up in my own thoughts that I couldn't see what was at the end of my nose?

If I had taken one more step I am sure the kookaburra would have flown away. My whole family would have missed this wonderful start to the day. It would have been a terrible loss, seeing these types of bird so close is such a rare experience. It turned out to be a bit of a wake-up call to me. I really need to slow down a bit and pay more attention. Why is it we get so caught up in what we are running towards, that we forget to enjoy that which is in front of us?

My house is close to a river near the bush, so we are blessed with the songs of the kookaburra quite often. This was the first time one of these birds communicated with me so personally though. I will remember this meeting too every time I hear a kookaburra sing, hearing the message in the song. "Take a deep breath Damian" it will sing. History of the Spiritual use of Mushrooms

Since at least 5,000 B.C., people have used "spiritual mushrooms" in their religious rituals. The San Peoples of Tassili in southeast Algeria left behind cave paintings illustrating dancing, masked medicine men with mushrooms in their hands. It's believed the mushrooms were of the consciousness-altering variety.

Tassili is today part of the Saharan desert, mountainous and uninhabited. But in the days of the San Peoples, the environment was savannah-like and inhabited by cattle, lions and even crocodiles. There's archeological evidence of contact between the San Peoples of Tassili and other tribes across the Sahara, from Chad to Egypt, perhaps even Greece.

The Greek Eleusinian Mysteries - spiritual initiation ceremonies - date back to 1,600 B.C. and for two millennia it was the most important spiritual initiation ceremony of ancient Europe. Many scholars believe the ceremony employed the use of mind-altering mushrooms. With participants such as Plato and Aristotle, the influence of the Eleusinian Mysteries on the formation of western culture cannot be underestimated.

Jumping another millennia or so forward in time, the Vikings were known to consume the poisonous species Fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) in limited amounts to overcome fear. In spiritual pre-war ceremonies, they are said to have eaten mushrooms and danced in the woods before going into battle.

Granted, most of us would not consider this form of warrior spirituality in any way "admirable." But it was part of the Viking religious practices, whatever our opinion of them may be. Gordon Wasson even claimed in a controversial book titled Soma: Divine Mushroom of Immortality that Fly agaric was the very substance referred to in ancient Vedic literature as the mysterious soma, a plant or mushroom extract used in ancient Hindu rituals and believed to bestow immortality of the soul and other divine qualities to the consumer.

Across the Atlantic Ocean, spiritual rituals using consciousness-altering mushrooms were first recorded in the Mixtec Codex, which is of uncertain age from between the 13th and 15th centuries. In ancient engravings, the Mixtec gods are often depicted with mushrooms in their hands.

Even though Mixtecs clearly told westerners of their use of spiritual mushrooms in sacred ceremonies, American and European scholars still doubted them in classic condescending fashion.

American botanist William Safford argued that peyote buttons were mistaken for mushrooms, while other scientists insisted that the Mixtec culture really did use mind-expanding mushrooms in their religious rituals.

The debate raged on until the early 1930s, when amateur anthropologist Robert Weitlaner got invited to witness an original spiritual ceremony that included the use of consciousness-altering mushrooms.

Then in 1953, mycologist R. Gordon Wasson and his wife Valentina Povlovna as the first westerners became honored participants in a mushroom ceremony - Velada - performed by shaman Don Aurelio. Wasson published his account of the Velada in Life Magazine, 1957. His article initiated the broader public awareness of spiritual mushrooms.

Out of 60 Psilocybe species, 25 are known to contain the mind-altering compounds psilocin (unstable) and psilocybin (stable). The two species Psilocybin caerulescens and Psilocybin mexicana are believed to be the ones used by the Mixtec. Although Psilocybin cubensis is now more common even in America, it is believed to have arrived with the Europeans.

Today, use of consciousness-altering mushrooms is illegal in most countries of the world due to the fact that they are often misused as recreational drugs. Only in The Netherlands were fresh (not dried) Psilocybe mushrooms until recently legal.

That all changed after a French 17-year-old girl jumped off a bridge when eating Psilocybe mushrooms. The Dutch parliament responded with a ban on the sale of so called "magic mushrooms," which took effect December 1, 2008. People have used mushrooms as spiritual tools for at least 7,000 years. Thats the age of the oldest preserved records, cave paintings left by the historic San Peoples in Tassili of southeast Algeria. Images depict what has been interpreted as masked, dancing medicine men holding mushrooms in their hand; presumably of the awareness altering variety.

The area of Tassili is today an arid and desolate mountainous region of the Sahara desert but in the day of the cave painters, it had a habitable savannah-like climate with cattle, crocodiles and other large animals. Cultural ties of the San Peoples are evidenced across the Sahara region from Chad to Egypt, and perhaps in extension all the way to Greece.

Jumping forward 3,400 years in time to Greece, 1,600 B.C., we find the Eleusinian Mysteries. Continuous for an astounding two millennia, the Eleusinian Mystery initiation was the most important spiritual ceremony of ancient Europe. Scholars believe the Mysteries involved use of consciousness-altering mushrooms. With well-known participants like Plato and Aristotle, its influence on western civilization cannot be denied.

Paul Stamets now grows his own agarikon, which he uses for his agarikon extract. A sample of this extract was sent to the BIO Shield Program for testing at a top security lab located in Ft. Dietrich, MD. The BIO Shield Program is a division within the Defense Department created to search for remedies against biological warfare agents and bioterrorism threats - e.g. pathogens like smallpox or anthrax.

Within this BIO Shield Program, tens of thousands of natural and manmade compounds have been tested for use against biological warfare pathogens. Drug discovery supervisor John Seacrest was happy to report on the radio show that the agarikon extract provided by Stamets had indeed been one of the few substances tested that had proved effective against smallpox related viruses.

Paul Stamets has since applied for a patent on a mushroom-based anti-viral drug. Boston investor John Norris is one of his financial backers. Mr. Norris believes in the project due in part to the fact that some individuals simply are not willing or not able to be vaccinated against smallpox or other potential biological warfare agents.

It's also worth mentioning that Mr. Norris is a former second in command in the FDA hierarchy, and he believes that through his joint venture with Paul Stamets, they could soon be selling several hundred million doses of the Stamets agarikon extract to the armies of the United States, U.K., and Germany.

However, that may still be a few years off. This new mushroom-based anti-viral drug must first go through many lab trials and then gain final approval by the FDA.

When in the midst of adjusting to living with new people in a new environment, children can get overwhelmed. Even for children who enjoy new adventures and love sleepovers with friends and relatives, a short bout of homesickness is a common reaction.

As parent it's important not to measure your success by by your child's homesickness. Don't feel as if your child is not independent just because your child is having a difficult time adjusting to summer camp. It may be difficult to understand how hard your child finds the first few days at camp. For them often it seems that he will never see you again. Be sure to rationally look at your child's reactions. Fishing is like reading a book. The difference is this is a living book. Like a book, you start out by looking at the cover. Only, when you are fishing the cover is the weather conditions. You look at the wind, sun, tide, humidity, and the temperature of both the air and the water. With this knowledge, you can make the decision about how you will be fishing - by boat, kayak, or wading, using light tackle or fly. Then you can choose where you want to fish and what you are going to fish for.

Once on the water it is time to do more "reading". Pay close attention to all of the early morning activity around you, especially bait fish. There are usually schools of mullet jumping around, and small shrimp popping out of the water if you are looking for them. If you notice bait fish fleeing an area try casting in that direction. Usually this means something is chasing them, so that is a good place to start. Look down into the water for smaller creatures like crabs that may also be running away from larger game fish.

Pay attention to where the birds are feeding. I watch especially for the blue heron, pelicans, and gulls. They are always on the fish. Follow them. If you know what to look for you can learn to read the wildlife activity on the water just like a living book. It will tell you where to find fish and what they are feeding on.

Learning to read the structure of your fishing site is another way to catch those elusive fish. Look for drains. Those are gaps in the islands that allow water to flow in or off the flats into deeper water. I call these areas bait highways, and if the bait fish are traveling them, the predator fish are not far behind. Set up to the sides of these highways, especially at peak tidal changes.

When you get into this drain area, try starting off with a top water lure first. This lure is good for recon as fish nearby will usually strike at it, giving you a quick indication as to whether or not there are any fish in the area. Once you see a strike, switch over to a soft plastic fishing lure that will give you the advantage on that big speckled trout. I always throw a weedless lure, about 3 casts into each section before looking for somewhere else.

Whether I am fishing for fun, with clients or in a tournament, I generally go with the Sea Devil by Brown Lures. Pink Hologram seems to work best for me, but they make many different colors that can work great for clear or muddy water.

Learning to read this "living book" can give you a real advantage the next time that you go fishing. As always, pay attention to the weather, wildlife and structure to get the most out of your day. Also commonly known by its Latin name as "Ganoderma," or Chinese "Ling Zhi," Reishi is by far the most searched medicinal mushroom on the Internet with over 200,000 searches per month. And although it may not be the panacea ("cure-all") that some hold it to be, the fact that modern research confirms it as an inflammation modulator may help explain why it has long been heralded as such in the Orient.

In fact, Chinese medical practitioners have been prescribing Reishi extract for ages in cases of arthritis, bronchitis and other conditions involving any type of inflammation. Modern research in Asia as well as in America and Europe confirm the validity of these uses. Out of 19 papers used for this article, 17 reported positive results in the use or Reishi extract for arthritis. Only two were studies were inconclusive, both of which were conducted by the same research team. (1,2)

An American study conducted in 1993 by Lin et al. concluded that a water extract of Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi) demonstrated "significant anti-inflammatory activity." (4) A study out of India ten years later found that an extract of Reishi decreased inflammation in conditions of acute edema and chronic edema by 56% and 60%. (3) Seven additional research papers were found during the writing of this article that all concluded that Reishi is a potent anti-inflammatory medicinal mushroom. (5,6,7,8,9,10,11)

Other Reishi studies have been performed which more directly relate to arthritis. A 2006 report by Kenneth Blum et al. provided support that clinical evidence demonstrates the effectiveness and safety of natural substances for joint health, such as glucosamine sulfate , chondroitin sulfate, and Ganoderma lucidum [Reishi]. The same year, another study summarized findings that Reishi in combination with a Chinese herbal remedy known as San-Miao-San demonstrated a positive "immunomodulatory effect" on rheumatoid arthritis. (13)

The answer as to how, precisely, Reishi extract accomplishes this "immunomodulatory effect" may have been given by another Chinese study the following year, which states that an isolated Reishi polysaccharide peptide "significantly inhibited" RASF, which is an indicator of rheumatoid arthritis. (RASF stands for "Rheumatoid Arthritis Synovial Fibroblasts.") (14)

Several additional papers have been published that summarize positive results in the use of Reishi against arthritis. (15,16,17) One even states that Reishi compares favorably to prednisone, albeit without side effects. (18) On the other hand, a separate study found that supplementing with Reishi helped balance the side effects of prednisolone* that were experienced by some patients, including protein in the urine and cell toxicity. (19) (Prednisolone is the active compound of prednisone, which gets broken down by the liver and converted to prednisolone.)

In conclusion, the findings of 17 out of the 19 scientific papers referenced for this article agree that Reishi can help support joint health in cases of arthritis. However, it is important to always consult a licensed medical practitioner before using any herb for medicinal purposes, and to never change the use of existing prescription drugs without talking to your doctor about it first.

Note on name confusion: The name "Reishi" is Japanese for the perennial tree mushroom that American naturalists refer to as "Varnished Conk." In China, it is known as "Ling Zhi." All these names usually refer to the species Ganoderma lucidum, which for the sake of distinction from other types of Reishi may sometimes be called "Common Reishi" or "Red Reishi."

Texas Grass Fishing Tips to increase your success

Fishing in the Lower Laguna Madre can be one of the most rewarding, and difficult, fishing experiences in Texas. This region in South Texas is home to a wide variety of game fish species ranging from speckled trout and redfish, to flounder, tarpon and snook. What makes this area so unique is the over-abundance of sea grass that can be found throughout the bay system.

A key part of our local fisheries' success are these grass beds and flourishing algae that you can find in this region of South Texas. The beds provide structure and attack points for the game fish, as well as great hatching areas for all of the baitfish that they feed on. There is a wide range of marine species that call this special region home.

In other parts of the Texas coast getting hung up in grass is not a major problem, but down south where the grass beds can be found in a variety of species and cover over eighty-five percent of our bay system can be a good thing and a bad one at the same time. A major dilemma for anglers that are not used to fishing the lower part of the Laguna Madre is to keep a soft plastic fishing lure off of the grass.

The species of grass named Thalassia testudinum (aka turtle grass) in particular is all over the place. This turtle grass is a favorite for holding fish, but can also be the most challenging. Whether you are an experienced angler or not, trying to navigate this grass can really ruin your day with frustration if you aren't prepared for it.

It is important that your lure stays in the key "strike zone" as much as possible. In order to do this you have to keep the lure just above the grass without catching it. What I do to accomplish this task is keep my rod bent at a 45 degree angle, maybe even a little bit higher when the grass is thicker. The next half of the puzzle is your lure retrieval.

What you want to focus on is making sure that your lure is constantly in motion when over thick grass so that it doesn't get stuck. This can take a while to learn, but once you get the rhythm down pat your success rate of landing fish can skyrocket.

My technique is based on constant motion. My lure is constantly moving up and down thanks to non-stop action by the rod tip. Other people prefer to use a pop motion two or three times and then let the lure drop which can work as well. My method works for me, but can definitely wear your arm out by the end of the day.

Whatever technique you use, the important thing to keep in mind is that the lure needs to keep moving in order to not snag the grass. It may take hours of practice to get this method down but I assure you it is worth it. Also, watch the people fishing near you. If you see someone who isn't getting caught in the grass then pay attention to how their rod tip is moving and their retrieval rate. Don't be afraid to experiment and practice different methods, that is usually the best way to get better.
